As the United Nations celebrates World Press Freedom Day. We will showcase this year’s theme “ A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis ”. We will be hosting the film " Under The Dome ", a powerful documentary on the consequences of air pollution. This film has been banned in China for fear of collective action by the public. The film is directed by journalist, Chai Jing.  The world is going through an unprecedented environmental emergency which poses an existential threat to this and future generations. People need to know about this – and journalists and media workers have a key role in informing and educating them. Local, national and global media outlets can highlight stories about the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, and environmental injustice. Through their work, people come to understand the plight of our planet, and are mobilized and empowered to take action for change. Media workers also document environmental degradation. And they provide evidence of environmental vandalism that helps to hold those responsible to account. It is no surprise that some powerful people, companies and institutions will stop at nothing to prevent environmental journalists from doing their jobs. Media freedom is under siege. Call for stronger support for environmental journalists and better governance of digital platforms.

UNESCO report reveals 70% of environmental journalists have been attacked for their work. A new report published on World Press Freedom Day, 3 May, warns of increasing violence against, and intimidation of journalists reporting on the environment and climate disruption . At least 749 journalists or news media reporting on environmental issues have been attacked in the last 15 years, and online disinformation has surged dramatically in this period. UNESCO is calling for stronger support for environmental journalists and better governance of digital platforms. its new report Press and Planet in Danger , UNESCO analysis revealed instances in which at least 749 journalists and news media outlets reporting on environmental issues were targeted with murder, physical violence, detention and arrest, online harassment or legal attacks in the period 2009-2023. 2024 World Press Freedom Day events in Thailand address media freedom, environmental reporting, and journalism in the dawning era of artificial intelligence. On World Press Freedom Day , 3 May, UNESCO and the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand (FCCT) will co-host a public seminar, ‘Media freedom in Thailand post-election amidst environmental crisis, and the path towards anti-SLAPP Law.’ The on-site and live-streamed event is co-organized by the UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok and the non-profit independent newspaper Prachatai.
